THE Ilimo Dairy farm, outside Port Moresby, has been working with schools to promote the benefits of milk and its role in the food system.
Farm operator Innovative Agro Indsutries (IAI) PNG, commemorated World Milk Day which was established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation to recognise the importance of milk as a food and its role in global food systems, providing economic, nutritional, and social benefits to many people.
It has been observed on June 1 annually since 2001.
The benefits of providing school children with milk were many and very important.
Dairy products provide an abundant supply of high-quality protein, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iodine and vitamins B2 and B12.
Analysis also showed that a quality education, combined with a guaranteed package of health and nutrition interventions at school, such as school feeding, can contribute to child development.
For the past two years, the Ilimo Dairy farm teams had been working with schools to promote healthy nutritional awareness.
It said through a fun experience, the children learnt the process of how the milk is crafted, were encouraged to ask questions, played games and taste fresh Ilimo products.
