THE EMERGENCY response team (ERT) of Ramu NiCo (MCC) Basamuk refinery carried out some impressive and daring rescue drills last Friday as the weeklong national mining safety week ended.
The ERT, which was supervised by team leader Dave Williams and Paul Tomelis, impressed management officials and fellow colleagues as well as the two inspectors from the Mineral Resources Authority.
Williams said the rope rescue at heights was usually high-risk because it was not at ground level and difficult to get the equipment up for rescue operation.
However, it was important that the ERT team members felt concerned about the safety of the casualty.
Rope-rescue was also a time PPE (personal protective equipment) for crews involve in mission.
Various activities highlighted the theme of “sustaining life through safe work practices” during the weeklong safety events at Ramu NiCo Basamuk refinery site.
These included workers’ parade and march-by, poster drawing competition, which saw employees of Ramu NiCo put their skills and talent to good use, song competition and safety inspection in all the departments.
The KBK Mine also observed the safety week with a number of activities.
KBK Mine manager Bill Miname said the Ramu NiCo employees not only enjoyed the celebration but also learnt the true value of safety.
“We as a team Ramu NiCo must continue the good work we have just started and developed in each man and woman the strongest faith and conviction in safe practices,” Miname said.
Chairman and director of Ramu NiCo Zhao Shimin, who officially opened the event in Madang, travelled to Basamuk last Thursday to witness song competition by employees.

The safety event was sanctioned by the PNG Mines Inspection Secretariat of MRA.
