ACTING South Fly commander Snr Insp Ewai Segi says police will continue detaining and arresting suspects despite the deteriorating conditions of the Daru police station.
“The toilets are clogged with the bowls overflowing with human waste,” he said.
“But we will continue with our job and put detainees and suspects in the lockups.”
Snr Insp Segi said police had no choice but would continue to enforce the rule of law to maintain law and order for public safety.
“The deteriorating conditions of police station lockups is an ongoing issue and public knowledge,” he said.
“Those who break the law will still end up in the lockups. They are not expected to live comfortably here.
“But we still look after them and provide three meals a day.”
Snr Insp Segi said this yesterday after photos had been posted on Facebook alleging inhumane condition in police lockups.
The posts claimed the lockups were condemned and should be shut down immediately.
The post also questioned what the Government and Health Department doing .
The posts claimed the conditions had become a serious health issue which had to be addressed immediately.
Prisoners were allegedly sleeping with maggots crawling all around and they were killing the maggots to get a good night’s rest.
The posts also alleged that privileges to access fresh air outside and washing had been denied.
One post claimed: “I have been in there without washing for more than three weeks and this is an abuse of human rights.
“I call on the Health Department and Government to look into the situation immediately or something/someone will eventually get sick and die due to unhygienic conditions.”
