Data vital for distributing resources equally: Official

Data is crucial for equal distribution of resources, governance and development, an expatriate says.
Overseas Coastal Area Development Institute of Japan research head Taiji Kawakami said the effective distribution of resources at the community up to the national level depend on accessed information and data.
“Sharing of basic data information between the organisations and stakeholders is very important and can be a better way to distribute natural resources at the local and national level,” he said.
Kawakami said this during a discussion between the Transport Department and maritime sector agencies, and Japanese International Corporation Agency (Jica) yesterday. The stakeholders discussed a capacity development project on port policy and administration in the country.
The project was signed by the Government and Jica last Sept 29, to enhance the Transport Department and maritime sector agencies to collect and analyse port information and data.
Transport Department secretary Roy Mumu said the project started in April and would end in March 2025.
“We believe that sharing, analysing and publishing the data that each organisation has would be beneficial not only for DoT but also for the development of the maritime transport sector in the country,” Mumu said.
