COMPETITIION leaders Air Niugini (PX) were humbled by Datec who gave them a rude welcome to the New Year with a 23-22 win in private companies netball at the Rita Flynn Courts yesterday.
Goal attack Rachael Kapi was at the helm scoring five points in the first half and finishing off with seven to add 12 points against her name.
Her partner goal shooter Netanya Mulina assisted well with 11 points, shooting seven points in the first half and four in the second half as the cellar dwellers outplayed PX.
In the other upset of the premier division, Veupunama 1 sank Bank South Pacific 26-19 with Kila Leana scoring the majority of the points.
Leana was off the track in the first half scoring 13 points which gave them a head start in the second half and Veupunama held on to win.
Goal shooter Karo Ali managed to score six points which added some weight to their seven-point victory.
The defending champions tried in vain with goal attack Renangi Mulina using her experience to steer BSP on the court but to no avail.
But Mulina’s hard-earned 13 points and goal shooter Jacklyn Hape’s six points could not get the champions back into the match.
In the main game, Brian Bell were given a scare before running away with a 22-20 win over Australian High Commission 1.
The scores were locked at 11-11. The game changed in the second half when the scores were tied three times at 12-12, 15-15 and 19-19.
But it all came down to goal shooter Caroline Genaia’s experience and her team’s patience that saw Brian Bell poke their nose ahead.
Young Loretta Maiva demolished AHC goal defending area when she potted in 16 while her opposite Mary Kule Age sank 14 points.
