JUSTICE Catherine Davani will give this year’s annual New Zealand Law Foundation Ethel Benjamin address in Dunedin today.

PNG’s first female National and Supreme Court judge will be the 17th woman to deliver the address in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.

The event is organised by the Otago Women Lawyers’ Society in honour of Ethel Benjamin, the first woman to be admitted to practice in New Zealand and the first woman admitted to the bar in the Southern Hemisphere.

Benjamin was born in 1875 and was admitted in 1897, after graduating from the University of Otago.

Davani has 28 years of legal experience and has undertaken courses in PNG and overseas. She has also spoken at many conferences and workshops in PNG and overseas.

Davani has sat on major trials and deliberated on major decisions affecting the political and social lifestyle of PNG.
