Deal to support fisheries training in Tvet centres

THE National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Education Department to continue its support for technical fisheries training in technical vocational education training (Tvet) centres around the country.
NFA acting managing director Noan Parkop said that the support not only covered Tvet institutions in maritime provinces, but, also, extended to Tvet institutions in the Highlands, for aquaculture training.
“This partnership will assist Papua New Guinea with one of its medium-term development plan 3 goals 2018-2022, to maximise economic returns through sustainable management and development of the fisheries resources to foster wealth creation, poverty alleviation and food security,” he said.
Parkop said the NFA placed emphasis on uniform fisheries technical training in Tvet centres based on the fisheries training needs assessment that was conducted in 2011 and recommendations from the fisheries training advisory committee.
Fisheries qualifications now conducted in the Tvet centres are as follows:

  • FISHING components of the certificate 1 in commercial fishing operations;
  • CERTIFICATE 1 in post-harvest operations; and,
  • CERTIFICATE 1 in aquaculture.

Parkop said last year, a new qualification was developed for the certificate 1 in fisheries skills technology combining all the fields of fisheries in one training, which provided students graduating with a much broad-based skills and knowledge of post-harvest operations, commercial fishing operations, general fishing skills and aquaculture skills.
It was hoped that in the future, this training would later be developed into a diploma programme that could also cater for the grade 12 school leavers.
