THE Government has been urged to amend its new laws on the death

penalty and include white collar crime.

Council president for Avi/Pori local level government in the Hela, Ailo Arapa, said yesterday that public servants who defrauded the State of substantial amounts of money should also face the death penalty.

He said corruption was still rampant and increasing despite substantial revenue earned by the country from natural resources.

“Since independence, we haven’t seen any big changes in the districts because of corruption and money meant for the people benefited only a few who became rich overnight while  the majority become poorer,” he said.

“When we have strong laws, the people in authority will not steal and there will be lots of money left to bring services to the people.

Arapa appealed to the attorney-general’s office to carry out awareness into the rural areas and inform the people about the new laws.
