Declare state of emergency

Letters

I WISH to kindly advice the Government to declare a State of emergency due to the fact that this country has a very weak bureaucracy to monitor and control the Covid-19 at all entry points, .
Due to the vulnerability of bribery and corrupt practice by citizens, such immediate emergency powers are required to give direction to deploy military to strategic coastal ports, border areas and projects where there are direct flights such as Ok Tedi and Lihir.
Since we lack specific skills, the Government should seek assistance from Australia to man the straits between AROB and Solomon Islands.
Such virus scare situation provides ideal opportunities for the country to seek financial and technical assistance to build our institutional test facilities such as the PNG Institute of Medical Research in Goroka.
Right now this country has a lot of security lax, institutional capacity is lacking and underfunded and if we have three or four cases of confirmed, Covid-19, we are doomed as a nation.
Our other international friends are forever ready to assist too.
Before, the hype of the coronavirus settles, the Government should explore options to capitalise on the situation too.
But we need an emergency declared to allow the PNGDF to man these entry points.
