Declining standards

Letters

TERTIARY institutions say the standard of students’ performance has dropped dramatically.
They will not lower the standard of their institutions to accommodate low-performing students.
A few years back, the quality and standard was maintained.
There are many reasons why the standard dropped.
Comparisons are made from the attitude of previous students with the current.
Former students honoured their parents.
They found it so hard to cheat their parents who struggled hard to earn a living.
Today we have a heartless and attitude-problem generation, which take things for granted and never understands real life challenges.
Social media takes more than 30 per cent of students’ time.
Average time any student should give social media is 5 per cent.
They Facebook while sitting in lecturer halls, doing research in library, during project discussions, during dining and the list goes on.
The more social media takes their time, less concentration and effort is given to academic work and studies.
It is now normal to many students in their regional groups in tertiary institutions to run night club dances in the name of fundraising.
This is an excuse to engage in many bad social activities like heavy intoxication, fornication and adultery (unwanted pregnancies and abortion on rise) and peer influences. Students do not accomplish the purpose of their existence in schools.
Students previously found it hard to get drunk or bring their boyfriends/girlfriends before their sponsors.
Students can also ask their sponsors to join them in fundraising dance in night clubs.
One of the major diversions from studies is early boyfriend/girlfriend relationships.
The level of swearing and disrespect is worse than before.
Students’ value and integrity drops.
There seems to be no difference between any illiterate on the street and a student in a tertiary institution.
If one can remember well, before the mid-1990s, children found it hard to swear, smoke and chew betel nut in front of their parents and teachers at primary school level, disrespect parents and others, have school fights and the list goes on.
Godly principles are now rare in every community and home.
What’s so wrong?
