 DEFENCE survived a scare from village team, Borea to win the Port Moresby Soccer Association pre-season grand final 4-3 at Bisini Soccer ground.

The Elizah Selan-coached team was leading 3-0 at one stage but the Rigo Melo boys battled back into the game to narrow the score before time ran out against them.

Defence proved that their elevation back into the Super League competition is no fluke as they are serious contenders for the 2013 season.

Selan, assisted by Eastern Stars FC trainer David Kaepapa, saw his boys waste no time in beating Borea. 

Earlier in the semi-finals, Defence beat Blue Kumuls 3-1, while Borea thrashed a depleted Rapatona side 5-0.

In the third and fourth play-off, Blue Kumul latest recruit and former international striker/midfielder Paul Komboi displayed glimpses of the past to lead the Gordon Barrack-based team to victory.

Defence picked up K1,000 plus a trophy, Borea collected K600 and a trophy, while Rapatona and Blue Kumul won K300 and Rapatona settled for K150.

The women’s grand final was a one-sided affair as a young Mungkas outfit led by Lae import and national representatives Sandra Birum and Dorcas Sesevo ,thrashed Guria 3-0.

Mungkas received help from La­vina Hola, Lydia Nouata, Joy Getsi, Claire Getsi, while veteran Miriam Lanta, Jacqueline Chalau, Elaine Lema, Bertha Yapi and Joseth Kakaraya tried very hard for the losers.

In the women division, Mungkas picked up K500 plus a trophy, Guria settled for K300 and a trophy, while Rapatona walked away with K200 and University K100.
