Defence women shine in Byron Bay 7s

THE Port Moresby Defence women’s rugby union team to the Byron Bay 7s tournament in Australia  returned on Tuesday after making the cup semi-final of the women’s division.
Team coach John Larry said the side performed  well winning five of six games and averaging over 30 points per match and gaining a reputation for their physical style.
Defence lost to eventual champions Eastsyde of New Zealand 36-0 but defeated Sydney University 17-15, West Bulldogs 31-0, Qld University 39-5,  X-Rats 54-0 and Coffs Harbour 56-0.
Larry said the team pulled up short in the semi-final due to fatigue but kept Eastsyde scoreless in the second half.
The Byron Bay 7s is an annual international event which attracts teams from around the Pacific, Australia and New Zealand.
