Defining religion a ‘problem’

THERE are problems in determining and monitoring cult and religious groups in the country, according to Minister for Community Development, Religion and Youth Soroi Eoe.
“Religion is a very ambiguous term because it does not limit but extends to areas that may define what is religion to every one of us,” he said. “I think historically, it also goes back to our own cultural land drop. So we have our own religions in our societies in PNG. I guess the issue about religion was defined in that perspective.
“But having said that, it does create a problem on how we define the meaning of religion in the context of PNG.” Finschhafen MP Renbo Paita said there were cult movements in his electorate which he wanted the Government to eradicate.
Eoe agreed that there was a “mushrooming of religion or cult groups” in the country.
“How do we define religion in the PNG context? Do we limit it because a Christian faith dictate us to do it?” Eoe said.
“Our traditional beliefs – where do that fit in? It is a big question.”
Eoe said the PNG Council of Churches advised the ministry on how to view religion in the country.
