Dekena right to address state land

Letters, Normal

THE Minister for Lands and Physical Planning Lukas Dekena made the right move to address undeveloped government land in urban centres that have been acquired through unscrupulous deals.
These so-called officers in high places collaborated with cohorts and cronies to sell state land to foreigners and became rich over the years (The National, Oct 7).
He has called on customary landowners to register their land and have titles over them and lease to developers for long term benefits.
The minister is making the right move as most of the customary lands acquired for agricultural lease purposes, commercial lease, etc, were acquired by our colonial masters who paid landowners only a few pounds and shillings while others were purchased through barter trade using salt, tomahawks, bush knives, etc.
On that note, I would like to suggest that customary land adjacent to all state land, especially in urban centres, should be registered and then leased to the government or developers on a long-term basis.
