THE Constitutional Democratic Party is calling for an honest and transparent review of the national constitution.
During a fundraising dinner in Port Moresby, parliamentary leader Tobias Kulang said the political turmoil was “indications of loopholes in the Constitution”.
He said many political events had unfolded over the past months, resulting in the Constitution being abused.
“I still recall what the speaker of parliament Jeffery Nape said in his explanatory message on the floor of parliament during the change of government.
“He said there is a need to change certain sections of the Constitution.
“Although our forefathers had a limited literacy rate, they were able to come up with a well-written Constitution,” Kulang said.
However, he said some advice must have been given from outside and it was about time PNG used its own brains to come up with a modern but home-grown Constitution for the benefit of the country.
“Our Constitution is 36 years old and a review is overdue. We urgently need to revisit it,” he said.
He said recent events in the country were examples of the need for a review to tighten up the laws and the “PNGCDP will be the main force behind a complete honest and transparent review”.
