THE Health Department is organising various activities today to mark World Malaria Day.

It begins with a convoy of floats from the Sir Hubert Murray stadium in Port Moresby to the Hanuabada sports oval where the main celebrations will take place.

Roll Back Malaria partners unite their advocacy efforts around a common theme each year and have picked “invest in the future. Defeat malaria” this year to call attention to the big push to eradicate malaria in countries such as PNG.

A statement yesterday said the theme provided “a common platform for partners to showcase their successes in malaria control and unify efforts in the changing global context”.

The statement said malaria endemic countries had made incredible gains in malaria in the last decade but sustaining them would take extra efforts until malaria was eliminated worldwide.

The Roll Back Malaria campaign will help mount the resources and support the malaria fight through 2015 and beyond.
