THE Health Department and the Australian Government are helping a group of students receive training in midwifery and nursing.
The training is being carried out at the St. Gerard’s Community Health Worker Training School in Veifa’a, Kairuku district, Central.
Principal Sister Marlene Dewar had worked hard to lift the standard of the school by seeking funding assistance from outside sources.
Australian High Commission official Catherina Habon confirmed that the Australian Government and health department were providing training for students in midwifery and clinical nursing.
“The scholarship programme started in 2013. Today, 17 of the students graduating come under that programme,” Habon said.
“Most who have studied under the scholarship programme are now working.”
Australia is funding infrastructure development at the school.
This includes two new dormitories for males.
