FINANCE Minister James Marape has revealed that the department managed to record surplus funds in the 2013 fiscal year.

He did not mention how much was saved but said it was the result of prudent management of public funds last year.

He also said the introduction of the Alesco payroll system helped save a lot of money after the eradication of ghost names.

He said the department aimed to remove fake names from the payroll and effectively manage funds to raise some more surplus even though a K2.6 billion deficit was expected this year.

He said this when officially opening the 2014 public accounts for all government agencies, departments, provincial governments and statutory bodies.

Marape called on government departments, agencies, provinces and districts to submit their acquittals and work report on funds received in 2013.

“We are now open and back in business. The change in opening the accounts early is to allow continuity of work in the service delivery,” he said.
