THE Health Department is working with its partners to improve sexual health outcomes and increase health services for people affected by a disaster or crisis, an official says.

Dr Lahui Geita, the technical adviser for women’s health, said it was one of the health components included in the disaster plan but not carried out well by the health team.

Geita said the International Planned Parenthood Federation organisation, through its sexual reproductive health programme in crisis and post-crisis situations, had revived the  programme.

Interim executive director of the PNG Family Health Association Michael Salini said it was a global programme led by the organisation, and supported by  the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

“It is a difficult time when health facilities are destroyed and people are displaced, this programme is important to address their health,” Salini said.

“The programme activities focus on facilitating and supporting advocacy, training, coordination and service delivery related to sexual and reproductive health in humanitarian setting.”

He said the first training held in Rabaul.
