Device boost for hospital
BLOOD requirement in surgeries will be reduced with the use of endoscopes at the Port Moresby General Hospital, the hospital says.
The endoscopes were donated by Olympus Hong Kong to help improve its minimally invasive surgeries and were officially presented by Professor Sydney Chung last week.
Chung had started minimally invasive surgical procedures in 2003 when he was the professor of surgery at the University of Papua New Guinea School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Through him, Olympus donated the first set of equipment and training and the latest donation was timely because some 16-year-old equipment needed an upgrade.
A minimally invasive surgical procedure does reduce the requirement for the use of excess blood transfusion.
Bleeding spots can be clearly identified in a magnified and controlled view.
It helps shorten hospital stays and help make patient’s recovery faster than a conventional management. Patients also have smaller scars.
Port Moresby General Hospital has gastroscopes, colonscopes, duodenscopes and aparoscope which were operations by specialists for different procedures.
About three laproscope surgeries were done per week by specialists at Port Moresby General Hospital.
