Digicel Cup finals set

THE Digicel Cup elimination finals are set with the Rabaul Gurias taking on the Hela Wigmen and the Goroka Lahanis doing battle with the Mt Hagen Eagles in Port Moresby on Sunday.
It is understood the third-placed Gurias will field in-form SP Hunters fullback Terry Wapi for the National Football Stadium clash, which kicks off at 1pm.
The Gurias-Wigmen clash is a curtain-raiser for the showdown between defending champions Lahanis and the fifth-placed Eagles (3.30pm kick-off).
The Lahanis, who finished the 2019 season in fourth place, find themselves in familiar territory after coming from the fifth spot to bag the title last year.
Last year’s minor premiers and grand finalists Enga Mioks were bundled out of the title race by the Gurias in the final round of the regular season.
However, the Wigmen scraped through to the top-six playoffs with a 44-16 victory against the Central Dabaris 44-16.
Competition manager Stanley Hondina said minor premiers Lae Tigers and second-placed Waghi Tumbe had this weekend off.
“Week two (next weekend) will see the major semifinal (game three) between the Tigers and Tumbe, with the winners going straight to the grand final,” Hondina said.
“The two winners of the elimination finals will play the minor semifinal (game four) after the Tigers-Tumbe clash.”
The preliminary final on Sept 1 will see the losers of game three taking on the winners of game four. The winners take on the game-three victors in the grand final on Sept 8.
The Digicel Cup champions will walk away with K40,000 and the runners-up will pocket K20,000.
Hondina said in the event of a draw at the end of the regular 80 minutes, an extra five minutes will be played each way.
If the scores are still tied at the end of extra time, the golden point rule will apply until a winner is determined.
The ticket prices are K40 (grandstand), K20 (east stand), K25 (west wing), K10 (north and south stands) and K100 (club lounge minus catering). Tickets are available at all Ticketmastas outlets.
NFS gates open at 11.30am.
