THE Digicel Cup season was launched yesterday ahead of Saturday’s opener between Rabaul Gurias and Waghi Tumbe at the Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby (2pm kick-off).
Digicel Papua New Guinea senior vice-president Lorna McPherson and PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chief executive Stanley Hondina officiated at the launch in the presence of the captains of all 12 franchises.
She said Digicel was proud to support the country’s premier rugby league competition as naming rights sponsor for the 11th year.
“We are happy to back the country’s national sport for the next two years,” McPherson said.
“Despite the difficulties we’ve faced with Covid-19, we were able get approval and kick off the season.
“To the 12 teams, good luck to you all and may the best team win this year’s title.”
Hondina thanked Digicel and all their stakeholders for supporting the semi-professional competition for another year.
“It has been challenging for us to kick off the 2021 season,” he said.
“But we’ve managed to get clearance from the national pandemic response controller and we are happy to see the season start.
“Follow the protocols in place and let’s complete the year successfully.
“Good luck to all the teams.”
Hela Wigman Valentine Culligan returned the Digicel Cup trophy to the PNG National Rugby League Competition.
The premiership-winning skipper thanked PNGRFL and Digicel for a successful season last year.
“Thanks you for your hard work behind the scenes to kick off the upcoming season.”
