PNG National Rugby League Competition chief executive officer Stanley Hondina applauded the Mendi Muruks for their initiative in setting up the Southern Highlands Relief Fund to assist victims affected by the earthquake.
Hondina made these remarks on behalf of the body that runs the Digicel Cup competition in the country which the Mendi Muruks takes part in.
“I would like to acknowledge Mendi Muruks chairman Isaac Joseph and Mendi Rugby League for coming up with this initiative,” Hondina said. “We are all aware of the tragedy that has happened and in rugby league, we have a social obligation and we feel responsible to do our part.
“Rugby league is a family sport and we encourage families to come to the game.
“I am happy that the Muruks have taken this step to put its hand up and I think this is the first time a natural disaster of this kind has happened in the province and Muruks have taken this step to get relief funds for the people.
“It is great to see rugby league turning and giving back to the people. “The PNGNRLC supports the initiative as we approve of what they are doing to help restore normalcy.
“When Kato Ottio passed away it became a Papua New Guinea thing and that is the kind of support that comes with rugby league because it is not about them turning up during the games to support but it is about having the heart for the people and turning around to support the people when needs like these arise,”Hondina said.
The Hela Wigmen also donated money collected at a recent trial match to help victims from their province .
