DIGICEL has managed to return to operation 57 of the 66 towers damaged by the earthquakes, says chief executive Valde Fernandez.
“When the earthquake first struck, we lost 66 towers mainly in the highlands region,” he told a radio talkback show on Friday.
“We mobilised nine of our top teams from Port Moresby to go into the region and look into the infrastructure damage and try to connect the nation as quickly as possible.
“Out of the 66 towers, we have been able to recover 57. Three of those had been completely destroyed. We have to rebuild from the ground up.
“Some others have been vandalised but most of the community have assisted us in getting our towers back up and allowing our (Digicel) people to go and fix the towers.
“The communities have been supportive in getting the towers back up.
“What we have also done is while we were restoring the towers, we decided to connect the people. We offered unlimited calling as soon as a tower was up.”
Digicel gave K636,000 to the earthquake relief assistance on Friday.
