DIGICEL Fiji last Thursday announced an innovative service to give Fijians a wide range of capabilities using their Digicel cell phones.
Digicel mobile money will allow Fijians to send and receive money, have direct top up on their phones, pay Digicel post-paid bills and deposit or withdraw from their “mobile phone electronic wallets”.
Digicel Fiji chief executive officer Matt Davey said the services offer a secure and convenient way of transferring and handling money and was set to have a huge impact on the customers in Fiji and across the Pacific.
“As the Pacific’s fastest growing telecoms provider, Digicel is uniquely positioned to roll out this service across the Pacific.
“Customers can join for free and our message is simple: Give Digicel mobile money a try and you will be amazed at how it can make your life easier,” he added.
In partnership with Westpac Bank, the project had been in development over 10 months, and is regulated by the Reserve Bank of Fiji and supported by the United Nations’ Development programme’s (UNDP) Pacific Financial Inclusion Fund (PFIP) and the GSMA.
The service is aimed at promoting financial inclusion within Fiji and the Pacific Islands, which the service aims to assist in addressing the needs of over 70% Fijians who do not have access to basic financial service.
Registration is free and can be completed by dialing *888#.
Accounts can be accessed at selected Post Fiji outlets and Digicel stores nationwide and at Westpac branches in the coming weeks.
Fiji is the first of Digicel’s six Pacific markets to trial this service, with plans set for a roll out to all the other markets.
