DIGICEL PNG has invested another US$3 million (K8.2m) to increase the network capacity during the 2015 Pacific Games for its Port Moresby customers, it announced on Friday.

The company outlaid an additional US$13.4 million (K36.7m) on 56 LTE (long term evolution) sites in Port Moresby alone.

Digicel said the upgrades would ensure Pacific Games supporters were up to speed and fully connected with an influx of international visitors to arrive this week.

Chief executive officer Maurice McCarthy revealed they had increased the network capacity around all Pacific Games stadiums and key venues in Port Moresby, by upgrading existing towers and adding new towers.

“The beauty of this investment on the network is that it will benefit the citizens of Port Moresby long after the Games are over, with faster and more reliable internet speed and consistent coverage,” McCarthy said.

“It will allow Port Moresby to handle many more large scale events, which have high traffic periods. In the past such events placed enormous pressure on the network’s capacity.”

He added that Digicel remained focused on long-term investment in PNG.

“Like the rest of the country, we ourselves are looking forward to a vibrant and exciting time in our recent history next week with the opening of the Pacific Games,” he said.

“The positive feeling around Port Moresby is palpable and we are confident that this network upgrade will enhance the experience overall, meeting everyone’s communication needs when we are on show as a nation.”
