DIGICEL will be the first internet service provider to introduce the long term evolution (LTE) technology next month.

Digicel said yesterday that commercial services would begin next month based on an initial deployment in Port Moresby.

With rollouts accelerating in some neighbouring countries, wireless broadband speeds were increasing and Digicel was preparing to take the lead in PNG by a higher speed of internet connectivity with 4G|LTE.

LTE is a 4th generation (4G) mobile technology designed to deliver a faster wireless broadband internet service that enables users to surf, stream and download with speeds that are significantly higher than existing 3G networks allow.

Chief executive John Mangos said the move would strengthen the country’s data backbone and improve the offering of wireless broadband and data-related services.

He said: “We will be launching this with 10 sites within the capital city come March and eventually rollout into the other centres.

“It will initially be made available to post-paid customers and later open up to pre-paid customers.

“Of the 10 initial 4G|LTE sites, eight are located within the central business district (CBD) area while the other two will be in Savannah Heights and Gordon.”
