PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill says moving many people straight from traditional societies to where we now are, depends much on the expansion of digital networks around the country.
Addressing the second PNG Digital Economy Forum in Port Moresby yesterday, O’Neill said: “Our people have access to more information.
“But there are problems, problems relating to fake news, misinformation has caused fights and deaths, access to pornography leading to sexual abuse.
“These are some of the challenges we face, and we, as a country, must find solutions.”
The prime minister told industry players that partnership in the sector was important, adding that the task for any government was to ensure people, businesses and organisations can benefit from new technologies.
“Digital inclusion is essential for communities if we are to experience the benefits of the digital revolution, particularly for our remote and rural areas.
“We must work together to succeed.
“We have seen the emergence of new ICT businesses, where many of our young people are participating.
“I hope that the students studying overseas bring their new skills back home.
“While mobile phone access is increasing, there is a large gap for those who remain unconnected.”
