ENB Governor Leo Dion has made his stance to appoint a committee in the province to look into the continuous usage of plastics in shops and markets and provide assistance to the provincial government in completely banning plastics in the province.
He said there was an existing law that was passed at the floor of parliament which forbids people from using plastic bags, however, it was evident that plastic shopping bags are still being used in the country.
While addressing World Environment Day yesterday at Kokopo new market, Dion said he was saddened people still have attitude problems towards the environment, adding that humans were the major threat to Mother Nature, exhausting the environment on a daily basis.
“ENB will abide by law and take the lead in completely doing away with shopping plastic bags.”
Students from urban primary schools, OISCA International and public servants were all gathered at Kokopo market yesterday to mark World Environment Day.
