A MAN living with a disability was among 259 participants who graduated in the Ginigoada Business Development adult literacy training programme in Rigo, Central.

Nama Babaga, 47, from Sabuia village in Rigo, was the only participant with a hearing and speech impairment.

Adult literacy team leader Charlotte Namorong told The National in Port Moresby that despite his handicap, Babaga was willing to learn.

“He is very good at all the subjects,” she said.

“He uses his eyes to see my mouth and read my lips and then he can pick out what I am saying and starts doing his work.

“He has picked up things so fast and he wasn’t different to others.”

She said Babaga was able to form letters and do activities given to him.

“He understands writing skills very well because even though he cannot hear and speak, he could read my lips and see the words and work on his own,” she said. Namorong said when he found difficulties, he would ask his friends to help him do his work.

“He is a very unique participant who is willing to learn and we are thankful to Ginigoada for bringing this service right down to the rural areas to help local people who may not access basic services every day,” she said.

She said the training would help the graduates.
