PARENTS of students from Sumkar, Madang, attending tertiary institutions around the country will now be relieved of their burden to pay school fees as the Sumkar development authority (DDA) has stepped in to assist.
The Sumkar DDA, which sat for its first meeting for the year last week, resolved to allocate K1 million to subsidise school fees for tertiary students from the district, according to DDA chairman and local MP Chris Nangoi.
Nangoi said the DDA appreciated that 2021 would be a difficult year for parents to find school fees for their children in tertiary institutions and would subsidise school fees for tertiary school students from the district.
“It is our continuous commitment to invest in our human resource to ensure that Sumkar produces leaders and elite workers in this country,” he said.
“I know most parents in my district are subsistence farmers who rely on the income they acquire from copra and cocoa and other cash crops to pay for school fees so we have once again allocated funds to support them.”
Nangoi said with the support given by the district using public funds, he expected students to be mindful that they were expected to perform well in school.
“I encourage students to focus on their studies this academic year and give the best of their ability to whatever field of studies they pursue as their career pathway,” he said.
“Your parents have dedicated themselves to meet your school fees and they also have high expectations of you to do well in your studies.”
