District and LLG officials begin census training

TRAINING for district managers and local level government representatives for the national census begun on Monday in each province.
That comes as the national census team rushes to meet deadlines before census night on July 10.
The tallying of the national population runs from July 11-17.
More than 80 district administrators and 300 LLG councillors are expected to undergo training next week as a lead-up from the training of master trainers attended by 22 provincial census coordinators in Port Moresby last week.
The training, which ended last Friday, was to prepare provincial coordinators on what to expect and their roles and responsibilities during the population count.
National Statistician Joseph Aka has appealed to census co-ordinators at the start of the programme to ensure the trainees were well informed about their roles.
“As master trainers you have a critical role to play in the three levels of training to ensure we have that quality information at the time of main enumeration,” he said.
Aka said the government’s position was clear that it wanted nothing but high quality census data.
The provincial representatives received specific directions on what knowledge and information to impart to provincial trainers.
That includes the district administrators and the LLG councillors in next week’s training.
That will be followed by final training from June 27 to July 1 for more than 35,000 interviewers and supervisors.
