THE Wabag development authority has asked the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) to rehabilitate and revive the coffee industry in the district.
Wabag MP Dr Lino Tom wanted the CIC to work with the Wabag district coffee growers’ cooperative society to revive industry in Enga.
The district funded the Wabag coffee rehabilitation and nursery project at Birip village near Wabag town.
CIC will supply 200,000 coffee seedlings to the coffee rehabilitation and nursery project team.
The cooperative society, based at Birip, are now buying dry coffee beans at K6 per kilogram.
Coffee growers from the Ambum and Kompiam local level governments in Kompiam-Ambum district and Wapenamanda sell their dried coffee beans at Birip.
The project would ensure dried Arabica coffee beans secure the highest price generating revenue for coffee growers.
Coffee is mostly grown in the Aiyel Valley in Wabag.
Dr Tom recently upgraded the Birip-Aiyel Valley road for the coffee farmers.
Arabica coffee grows well in parts of the Kompiam-Ambum and Wapenamanda.
