TRAFFIC movement in and out of parts of Lufa district, Eastern Highlands, was cut off following a landslide.

The landslide occurred on Sunday night at at the Kuruka section of the Lufa-Oliguti road, cutting off about 60,000 people from Mt Michael and Unavi  local level governments.

Lufa district administrator Wesley Loko engaged  a local contractor to clear the debris and restore normal traffic.

The landslide was triggered by continuous heavy rain in the area.

Three other landslides occurred in the area, and flood waters have swept away the Hagavi Bridge and a culvert near Oliguti market.

Loko said the landslide stopped the movement of people, goods and services into the three LLGs.

“We responded quickly as responsible government agents to attended to the situation and restored normalcy,” he said.

Loko thanked the locals from Kuruka and affected sections of the road for their understanding to allow clearance work to proceed.

Goroka police task force commander David Kil led a team to the site and supervised the clearance work.
