District gets behind Rainy Lae team

HUON Gulf, under the leadership of MP and district development authority chairman Ross Seymour, is supporting Rainy Lae FC despite the cellar dwellers’ poor Women’s National Soccer League form.
The support of K5,000 and walk-out shirts was timely as the Northern Conference side recorded their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory against fellow strugglers Pacific Gardens at the National Sports Institute in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, on Saturday.
Seymour told the players that on behalf of his Huon Gulf people and the authority, they were happy to support the club.
Before Rainy Lae left for Goroka, he challenged them to record a win and they did not let him down.
“Don’t go and give them (Pacific Gardens) a chance,” Seymour said.
“Play strong football and come back with a win.”
Seymour said the district would continue to support Rainy Lae and would work towards taking ownership of the club. He said he would liaise with club officials to change the team name.
Seymour said he would also look at fielding a team in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League.
Rainy Lae manager Carol Yawing said the authority was not wrong in backing the club as most of the players were from the electorate, covering Nadzab and the Huon Gulf coastline.
She said Seymour was a patron of Rainy Lae and they would represent Huon Gulf in the league.
