District producing day-old chicks to supply poultry farmers

THE Gazelle district in East New Britain is producing day-old chicken to supply to poultry farmers in the province.
A first batch was supplied to farmers in the district this week.
MP Jelta Wong said this was done through the district’s commercial chicken hatchery, the Gazelle Kakaruk, a subsidiary of the Gazelle Business Corporation Ltd.
It was established as an agricultural growth initiative for the expansion of SME opportunities to the people of Gazelle and ENB.
Wong said the aim of the project was to establish a day-old chick operation to address shortages and inconsistent supplies.
“An increase in supply improves protein availability to the people and provides SME opportunities,” he said.
He said the Gazelle Kakaruk had a broiler breeder flock imported from New Zealand with younger breeder flocks coming through to increase production.
The flocks will produce fertile eggs to be hatched out in the commercial hatchery at Kerevat.
