THE Southern Highlands provincial government has paid K2 million for the construction of the Kagua-Erave district office.

Governor William Powi paid the sum to contractor Simply Blue Collar, a company owned by former Mendi MP Michael Nali which has been involved in several major projects in the province.

He said the provincial government allocated K4m to Kagua-Erave – K2 million for the district office and K2 million for staff housing.

He assured the people that the provincial government would build more infrastructure. “We will build infrastructure that will stand the test of time,” Powi said.

“In Kagua-Erave, the challenge is for the district administration and the provincial government to demonstrate that commitment to build infrastructure that will transform the lives of our people.

“I think the intervention by the provincial government to the people of Southern Highlands is very clear: we will build infrastructure and we will build structures that will last.

“We will not waste scarce resources by giving out to individuals on labour-intensive contracts.” Powi said the contractor was building a K10 million police station in Kagua-Erave.

“Unless we get the law and order situation right in the district, all the other development initiatives that we want to bring in, will not stand.”

Nali, a three-term Mendi MP, said he was a skilled tradesman, boilermaker and builder.

He built the Popondetta police barracks for K10m, Baisu jail in Western Highlands for K10m, district office in Ialibu-Pangia, Southern Highlands, and other projects.
