 EAST Sepik’s capital Wewak will come alive next month when it hosts the Wewak district games.

Wewak district, which has five local level governments (LLGs), will host the first ever Wewak Games which will see teams in 10 different codes participating.

District sports coordinator David Kaling and his organising committee will run the event slated for June 5-10.

Athletics, soccer, softball, touch footy, volleyball, darts, netball, basketball, boxing and kickboxing are the codes that have been given the green light by the organising committee after they presented their budgets and plans on how they would organise their games.

The games will help the district prepare teams for other regional and national competitions.

Kaling said the organising committee had several goals to achieve which were:

  • Implementing the structure of the PNG Games where sporting talents had be identified in the LLG, district and provincial games and before being sent to the national games;
  • Ensuring that talent identification was all-inclusive where the five LLGs would have equal opportunity; and
  • That Wewak set the foundation and show other districts in the province how to organise such an event.

The organising committee has approved the programme.
