THE Boana district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church will host this year’s synod next week from Jan 12 to 17.
Participants will discuss the future of the church after 134 years of conducting spiritual duties since July 12, 1886.
More than 30,000 people from the 17 Lutheran districts in country and overseas missionaries are expected to attend.
Prime Minister James Marape will open the synod for the two million church members on Sunday.
Host patron Kelly Naru said the synod would hold elections for the positions held by Head Bishop Reverend Jack Urame, assistant Reverend Lucas Kedabing and general secretary Bernard Kaisom whose four-year terms had expired.
Kedabing said the Boana synod was special “to reflect the past, present and future of the church in the country”.
He said the delegates would identify core spiritual aspects of the church to ensure it continued preaching the word of God.
“We will identify approaches and methods used in church training institutions especially seminaries, how their welfare is supported and managed to provide spiritual and social services,” Kedabing said.
