THE Nawaeb development authority (DDA) in Morobe has set aside K5 million as its counter-fund towards the construction of the Bupuc Bridge, according to chairman and Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge.
He said the DDA would start this year to prepare the spot at which the bridge would be built at Situm.
“Before doing that, the DDA will make sure the Situm section of the Lae to Finschhafen highway at the Labuta local level government (LLG) is maintained before the construction begins,” he said.
The Bupuc Bridge, which was damaged in the ’70s, has, over the years, claimed properties, lives and caused transportation headaches within the Labuta local level government during the wet season.
“The bridge will serve nearly 10,000 people on the coastal villages of , including Finschhafen and Tewai-Siassi districts which are in the planned Lae to Finschhafen coastal highway,” Wenge said.
He made these comments after presenting Labuta LLG president Ian Sakae a new vehicle on Friday.
