AN electorate in Chimbu is taking the initiative to provide its people with electricity funded by the district development authority (DDA).
Sinasina-Yongumugl DDA paid private electrical contractors to connect electricity to some villages with cheques presented to four contractors by district administrator Obert Waure at Kamtai office last Friday.
The recipients were Midnips Enterprise Ltd, Gumane Daral Save Water and Sanitation Construction, Ali Electrical Ltd and Leather Electrical Ltd.
Midnips will string low voltage power lines from Kagai to Gagmabongi while Gumane Daral would connect Talis, near the Chimbu River, to Mikai, Kolagol and Konoma villages (5.6km).
Ali Electrical will connect power lines from Mogl to Kagai village (2km) in the Yongumugl area while Leather Electrical will work on the 1.8km Yobakogil-Korowai rural electrification project in Sinasina’s Tabare area.
Earlier in the year, two other contractors were funded by the DDA to work on the Koge-Giu and Nintul-Laswara power projects.
Sinasina-Yongumugl MP Kerenga Kua, who is Minister for Petroleum and DDA chairman, said electricity would play a vital role in enhancing the standard of living in the district.
Kua said the energy projects would enable human resources development as students would use electricity lights to study at night as well as power up their electronic devices.
He said small to medium enterprise (SME) activities in those villages would also be boosted with access to electricity.
Sinasina-Yongumugl is the only district in Chimbu, Eastern Highlands and Jiwaka that is implementing multiple (six) rural electrification projects simultaneously.
The contractors assured the district that they would deliver the projects by the year’s end.
