District trains front line leaders
The National, Thursday July 24th, 2014
WEWAK district, in East Sepik, is taking the lead in educating its ward councillors on their roles and responsibilities.
It is conducting a one-week induction for more than 100 ward councillors and other front liners in its five local level governments of Turubu, Wewak Island, Wewak Rural, Wewak Urban and Boikin Dagua.
The training started at the Divine Word University Kaindi campus on Monday.
Wewak MP and Correctional Services Minister Jim Simatab opened the orientation programme under the theme “Developing Capacity and Strengthening Governance for quality leaders and effective service delivery” which will end tomorrow.
Officers from the National Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs, finance and treasury, Auditor General and Department of Implementation and Rural Development are facilitating the training at the request of Simatab and Wewak District administrator Ricky Wobar.
East Sepik acting provincial administrator Otto Ganaii praised Simatab and Wobar for taking the initiative in organising the training for their ward members, who have been struggling with limited knowledge to effectively deliver government services in their respective communities.
“This training is very important because it will enable your councillors to learn their roles and responsibility and how best they can relate to the district administrator and their sectional heads.
“It will help them to practice good governance, be accountable and transparent while executing their duties.
“Wewak is the first district to roll out this training and I would like to commend your district administrator Ricky Wobar for taking the lead in providing the way forward for the district,” Ganaii said.
