DIVINE Word University’s (DWU) Unity Rugby League (URL) kicked off round one of its President’s Cup last weekend with 14 teams competing at the Madang campus.
This is the fifth year of the competition since it was established in 2016 by the then student representative council (SRC) and affiliated to the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League.
URL president Joel James told The National that although it was hosted like any other rugby competition, the competitors were vying for the Cup in recognition of the contributions made by the past and current SRC presidents to the DWU community.
“We are playing for this Cup in recognition of the services that the presidents had provided to the college, students and the DWU community as a whole,” he said.
“Round one started last weekend with 14 teams participating, including teams from other tertiary institutions in Madang such as Maritime College, Madang Technical College and Madang Teachers College.”
James said the women’s division had four teams.
