Division hosts parenting session

The non-formal division of Evangelical Lutheran Church education department is hosting an information sharing on positive parenting for child development.
The information sharing is a training and mentoring programme for parents of children aged between three and nine – a child’s brain develops faster during this period.
Coordinator Duaro Embi said mentoring programme would be held in Lae, tomorrow.
“The programme is very simple and would help parents and care-givers to understand importance of this age group, so they can better care for their children’s mental and physical development,” Embi said.
“We as a church can use this as an opportunity for spiritual development by enriching programme for ‘family life’.”
After the information sharing, a facilitators training would be conducted within the next two weeks at Bundun Centre in Gurakor village along Wau-Bulolo Highway.
United Nation Children’s and Education Fund (Unicef) is taking the lead and piloting the programme in Lae.
The Church and Unicef aims to improve parenting competencies, reduce behavioural problems in children, promote more harmonious family relationships and reduce domestic violence, promote positive parenting and non-violent disciplining strategies thereby reducing children’s exposure to violence through this programme.
One of the aims of the programme will be to enhance capacity of
child protection officers, volunteers and family life educators to effectively implement parenting programmes.
Embi said the programme would eventually reach the rest of Morobe.
Similar programme was conducted using Catholic Church network through Caritas in Chimbu, Western Highlands, Jiwaka and Madang.
