Time Out

TWELVE years ago, a girl inspired Brendan Chan to turn his love for music into a medium in which to impress her.
Twelve years later, this same girl continues to inspire Brendan to become the very best in what he does: DJing.
A professional freelancer, Brendan, aka DJ Dirty Fingerz, is a contender in the music industry as a DJ and producer for Six7Five Entertainment.
Brendan’s hard work and dedication to his craft was last week realised when he was crowned the Heineken Live Your Music DJ winnner in his premier category.
His prizes include a Heineken trophy, a LYM DJ console and a one-week trip to Sydney, Australia. Brendan said he was very proud of his achievement in the contest and was excitedly looking forward to
the trip as it would enhance his skills and enable him to be a better DJ.
“I’ve been DJing for a long time. About 12 years, actually, initially to impress a girl. The past two years I became a professional freelancer where I play at parties, weddings, small events, etc.
“I get my work from word-of-mouth, as well as using social media platforms to market my music,” he said.
“I am a big fan of music, it is my passion. But being a DJ is not easy. You have to work at the skill day and night, all the time, to perfect your technique.
“Winning this Heineken sponsored DJ competition is a physical recognition of my talent.
“Thus I am looking forward to the trip, to be able to learn as much as I can because I am all about learning.”
In Brendan’s premier category, 12 participants took part over a 7-week course.
Brendan went up against DJ XXX, DJ Diitroid and DJ Mantex in the semifinals where each DJ was given a specific genre to play.
Brendan aka DJ Dirty Fingerz was propelled into the grand final with his Moombahton set.
“Moombahton is a new genre of music which crosses dancehall, reggaeton and hiphop. Current artists using this genre include Major Lazer, a Jamaican singer, and Dillion Francis ft Skrillex’s Bun up the dance.
“For the grand final, we played our own music.” Judges looked at the choice of music, mixing ability, crowd reaction, energy, interaction with the crowd and the image of the contestant.
“For me, my image is my beard. That is my trademark.
“My music style is trap, hiphop and Rn-Bass, and it is all about positive vibes that make people happy.
“I want to thank Heineken PNG for their support in helping us realise our dreams.
“Finally, for those aspiring to become DJs, work really hard towards a goal and remember, you are never too old to learn new things.”
