Doc: Be wary of Covid

PAPUA New Guineans must be wary of taking the Coronavirus (Covid-19) into rural areas, a senior medical official says.
National Pandemic Response deputy controller Dr Esorom Daoni said most new infections were being reported in urban areas and he warned that people needed to be careful about taking the disease back to their villages.
He urged those who had not been vaccinated to get vaccinated in order to protect themselves and those they came in contact with from the virus.
Dr Daoni said after two weeks of receiving the vaccine, one could travel.
He said this period would allow the body to build up resistance to the virus.
As of Friday, 370,401 vaccine doses had been administered of which 279,220 had one dose and 211,421 people were fully vaccinated.
On Saturday, 41 new cases and a death were reported bringing the total of positive cases to 35,538.
The running total of the number of the Covid-19-related deaths in PNG as of Saturday was 551.
“So far, 34,554 people have recovered and 433 cases have diagnosed in the last 14 days and are still active,” Dr Daoni said.
He urged people to be responsible and adhere to the “Niupela Pasin” protocols over the Christmas period.
