THE country has not recorded any other coronavirus (Covid-19) Delta variant case since the first one confirmed by the National Control Centre two weeks ago, an official says.
On July 15, the Covid-19 Pandemic Response deputy controller Dr Daoni Esorom confirmed that a 65-year-old ship captain from the Philippines had tested positive for the Delta variant while under quarantine at a private hospital in Port Moresby.
It was confirmed through genome sequencing.
Yesterday, a hospital official told The National that the patient remained under quarantine in the Covid-19 ward.
“He has now tested negative for Covid-19 and we are awaiting confirmatory test results from the Central Public Health Laboratory,” the official said.
“We had taken enhanced precautions from day one hence no one else is affected to date.
“The patient is effectively isolated in a negative pressure room and staff are also quarantined.
“The hospital is waiting for further instructions from the controller’s office.”
The ship arrived with a crew of 16 with six testing positive for the Covid-19.
Two of them were admitted at the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) isolation ward and four who showed no symptoms were kept in quarantine on board the ship.
PMGH chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi told The National yesterday that the two crew members were still admitted at the isolation ward awaiting clearance.
