THE financial literacy training (FLT) course currently rolled out by the East New Britain Savings and Loan Society (ENBSLS) in the province has been commended for its focus on the village level. Dr Mellie Samson, a maternal child health specialist, said this recently in Kokopo after completing the course. Dr Samson was the only male participant among a group which underwent the FLT programme . The programme was held in Napapar 2 ward in the Central Gazelle local level government (LLG), Gazelle, recently. Dr Samson said he attended the training to compare it with other similar trainings.  He said focusing on the village level was key to empowering those in the rural community. Dr Samson took also the opportunity to share some health messages with the women. He also recommended the training for men as they too could also benefit from the knowledge acquired. Napapar Turguvai women’s group from Napapar 2 is a newly-established group formed to bring women together to empower them with life skills and knowledge to effect positive change in their families and communities. Group leader Shirley Kamuso said getting financial literacy training was crucial for women, especially mothers, in order to improve their small income earning activities through acquiring loans and managing their money. She said many women in the ward and LLG had dropped out of school and had not completed their primary or secondary education and, therefore, needed such training to empower them to improve their lives. Kamuso challenged other women to join the group and get valuable training. She thanked the ENBSLS trainers for running the course and for their advice on accessing loans from the society.
