KARANAS Dolphins are the kings of the Rabaul District Softball Association after beating an equally determined Talwat 3-2 in a tie-breaker men’s grand final at Kurakakaul Sports Field at the weekend.
Led by devastating pitcher Meledy Guere, the finals displayed professional ball handling and intelligent batting skills which was anybody’s game right up till the final seventh inning with a score line of 1-1 thus forced to a tie break.
Both teams were determined to become the first ever kings of Rabaul District Softball Association Competition since its inception last year and were all focused on the game hence preventing each other from scoring in the first four innings of the game.
At the top of the fifth inning, Karanas power hitter Ronald Apisai broke the spell crossing home plate for the first run scored in the game when Timothy Mariei connected a hit to bring Apisai home and himself safely to first base. Next batter Meledy Guere was next up but his smashing fly hit landed comfortably in Talwat right out fielder Peter Francis’s glove to bring the inning to an end.
Both teams were on full alert as supporters were all on their toes for the remaining two innings and with the score at 1-1.
Rabaul Karanas eventually won 3-2 in what was described as professional and high class softball.
In the women’s grand final, Pila Rats outclassed a more fancied and experienced Burmah Tigers to win 7-6 to become the queen of softball in Rabaul District.
