Domestic migration a serious problem

Letters

MIGRATION from the 21 provinces into nation’s capital needs to be monitored.
Villagers and aimless Papua New Guineans emigrating to Port Moresby without a good reason are causing chaotic lawlessness.
They are attracted to pull factors such as informal marketing and employment as labourers, which are the two main attractions. However, there are no proper laws to govern those intentions.
When those fail and the cost of living has drained all their possessions and resources, they turn to gambling, drug dealings, petty crimes and other social ills which are abundantly available in Port.
Instances like the recent attack on the St John Ambulance workers and newspaper photographer during the Trukai Fun Run was evidence of how domestic immigration is affecting everyone
else’s life by causing serious social issues. It is time now for the authorities to take this issue seriously into consideration.
It needs the governor and his Open MPs to combine their efforts to restrict the aimless movement of people into Port Moresby.
